Arts Club Meeting

First official meeting in the library on Monday January 22! Bring any submissions for the next zine! Hopefully officers will be elected and a deadline for the zine will be set.

untitled

There wasn't enough writing for the 3rd issue to be worth printing. There was an announcement about the comment box that is now in the library and about the deadline for the Christmas issue, which is tomorrow. I'm wondering if we'll even be able to get this one out before break.

what's new:
we can have art club/zine meetings in school as long as there's an adult present
there can be announcements about the zine
and we can sell it in school

I'm hoping that after the next issue, be it the Christmas one or after break, the idea will catch on since it's no longer underground.

threerd issue

I'm pushing the date for the 3rd zine deadline to Friday since Becca and Sara may send stuff in the mail and also so there will be more time to put it together over the weekend.

I had an idea sort of like Alanna's confessions box. What if we put a comment box in the library so kids could make suggestions about what they want in the school. We could print some of the best ones. I think it would also help other clubs like student council that are always asking what kids want. This way, if someone has an idea they really want to suggest but don't want to do it in person, they can submit anonymous suggestions/comments. Sort of like a written rants and raves... without the raves.

ARTS CLUB!

I found out this week that Arts Club is finally official! It was approved by the superintendent from what I heard. I asked Mr. Martin and he said that meetings will need to be during school and when Mr. Kuhn is there. That's all I know for now, but hopefully once we get back from Thanksgiving break we can have a meeting before Christmas.

I tried to make a post about the 3rd issue of the zine last week, but it didn't go through. We can get it out this coming week though. I have some things people gave me already so I might start putting it together now and see how much room there is left. Get me anything by THURSDAY! That way it can be out for Monday.

I'm wondering now if the zine can be sold in school through arts club.

...oops

I thought the meeting I scheduled was on Tuesday, not Monday and I also thought open house was Wednesday and Thursday, not Tuesday and Wednesday. It wouldn't have worked anyway because we had nothing to work with and no one to say after school on Monday. I think we should try it at a later time in the year though, and hopefully be more prepared.

installation meeting

Well, it was painful to say the least. "Anyone have ANY ideas?" .....*crickets*......*tumbleweed* ok so there were some good ideas thrown out after awhile, but still. You guys gotta learn to just say whatever comes to mind. I mean you heard me suggest slinkys and plants didn't you? Does our final idea have anything to do with slinkys or plants? Ok I'm done complaining, because it was a pretty successful meeting after all.

Here's what we did for those of you who couldn't make it:

Decided that the space we're using will be the ramp and that we'll set it up on Tues Nov 6 after school so that it can be up for the half days on Wed and Thurs and for the open house.

Basically talked about what I wrote in the last long entry about the general idea of an installation and started to think of ideas for a theme, something that would tie it all together (this is where the slinky/plant idea came in) and then I suggested a tunnel over the ramp... so we went out to look at the ramp, and it is a very large ramp, a lot bigger than I thought it was.

The rest of the meeting went on looking at the space we're going to use.
Our final idea turned out to be one of a diner/cafe type theme. The floor could be checkered using black and white paper in places, and the lower side of the ramp can be the counter.

Here's some things to be considered:
-lighting
-the 2 ways you can go/should we block of the steps so people have to use the ramp?
-furniture
-the walls
-a Fishes issue for the installation or a separate zine or zinelike thing to go along with it (this could be a good way to incorporate creative writing)

Mr. Kuhn was supportive of the idea, which is very encouraging. I should probably check with Mr. Martin about using the space, but he does know this is going on and he did walk through the meeting yesterday without asking any questions.

THERE'S A MEETING TOMORROW ACT A IN MR. RAFAIL'S ROOM!!!! COME OR YOU'LL BE COMPLETELY LOST!!!
And you won't know if there will be a meeting at my house over the weekend because I won't tell you unless you come :P

Installation

^from the zine. I just checked, and open house days are November 7 and 8. In about, 3 weeks. That actually gives us plenty of time. Maybe there will be another meeting in school this week, so we can schedule one after school sometime. Then there will probably be meetings at my house maybe afterschool or on a weekend.

The idea was to use the space by the ramp, or anywhere around that area. I was thinking about doing one that we all work on incorporating the five art areas, but we could also split up the five areas, work on it separately, then put it all together. Either way will probably work. Just think of ideas. Here's mine:

Visual arts:
-something similar to the cardboard box idea, if anyone knows what I'm talking about
-painting, sculpture, ect.
(the whole thing's visual, so this should be the easiest part)

Music:
-have music playing, someone could burn a cd, or we could do records.
-I had people suggest live music, which would be cool, but whoever wants to do it would have to be willing to commit some time

Dance:
-video tape a performance and have it playing on a tv
-incorporate dance themes/objects and such into a sculpture or somthing

Theater:
-the video thing could work here too
(this needs some suggestions, but then again, if it turn's out to be the weakest area represented, it should be ok, since we do after all have drama club)

Creative Writing:
-could work with visual art
(something like what's hanging up in cw)

The other blogs in my profile are both from installation art projects, so check them out if you want a visual example of what an installation can look like.

2nd Issue!

Last night I finished the 2nd issue which turned out to be only 4 sheets of paper, but that's not a bad thing. It was sort of a last minute, thrown together sort of issue, with most of the submissions being done in creative writing yesterday. I made a few more copies of the 1st issue and had 50 copies of the 2nd made.

At the football game I was selling them together for $1.25 or just a dollar for the 2nd issue. But made 8 bucks :D So the total amount we made so far now is $30.30 (I don't know where the 30 cents came from)

And it's up for approval if Daddy Kuhn can be sponsor! He told me Mr. Martin said there shouldn't be a problem about that, but it will just take a little longer before we actually have an offical club! I think we could keep the zine going like this so that it doesn't need approved by the school, but still have the funds go toward the club.

We could probably do another issue before Thanksgiving break, but speaking of breaks, I'm gonna take one for at least a week. x_X
